Mythica pushes borders with new live CD  (cover story)
Community News  |  By Jesse Chadderdon  |  December 13, 2009

Newark, Del. - The day Melissa Cox and her band mates stop exploring new music is likely the day they'll stop making it altogether.  So it's no surprise that Mythica's latest effort pushes all sorts of musical boundaries, from the band's more traditional Celtic sound, to progressive rock, Hawaiian music, and even a form of '60s psychedelic South American surf rock called chicha.

For the Fans, by the Fans
Out & About Magazine  |  By Mike Pollock  |  December 2009
When it came time to produce Celtic folk/rock band Mythica’s first live album, the aptly titled Live Is Good, songwriter Melissa Cox took a used idea and updated it. Mythica’s previous studio effort, Vicarious, from 2007, had been funded, in part, by businesses willing to take out ads in the CD’s liner notes. Additional support came via pre-orders. For Live Is Good, Cox decided to let the fans do the advertising. Using the pre-order system again, Cox enlisted fans to write messages to friends and family to be included in the liners. The personal touch worked—pre-orders nearly doubled, from around 40 for Vicarious to almost 70 for Live Is Good. “People were creative with it,” Cox says. “They treated it like a gift, sending messages to their kids and friends as a surprise.” The tracks from Live Is Good have been culled from Mythica performances over the last few years.

Mythica's music spins deep, deep for what gets called Celtic, deep for anything. There's plenty of sparkle amidst gravity's rainbow of bass tones, but always an urgency: "Play your violin, child, send your spiral down/Oh, let it be wicked..."But not just for wickedness' sake, or not the superstitious kind, anyway. "Don't be/Someone to carry over/Something that can't be seen." Romance, release-then the dark globe opens into a familiar, hollow world, with "For Patrick" presenting a swirling, medieval hip-hop summons to justice. Myths can make sense of things, in the air and the forge.

Out & About Magazine  |  By Pete Williams  |  July 2007

"The new nine-track album Vicarious [includes] the popular song “Tolkien’s Fever,” a strongly Celtic-influenced instrumental “Just Kidding” and the title track, a dark and forceful ballad showcasing Cox’s stunning vocals. The band’s great versatility, along with Cox’s remarkable writing and singing talent, make this album a must-hear for fans of both Celtic and alternative rock music."

Reviews

"Mythica have an ethereal other-worldly sound with eloquent lyrics which accurately portray what it means to be a 21st century Celt.  A true fusion of our Celtic heritage with the future."

- Marc Moss, Grammy-nominated producer and engineer, Target Studios

"Mythica has put together a brilliant collection of 4 songs on “Dangerous Little Monster”. Mythica’s style blends seamlessly combining the old world sound of the hammered dulcimer and violin with the new world sound of the acoustic guitar and bass. Melissa Cox’s powerful vocals tie it all together for a phenomenal sound that is mesmerizing."

"They are good...Cox is unflaggingly present, cutting through crowd noise with a workman’s mezzo-soprano: gutsier than first it seems, less fragile than first it sounds."
- Origivation Magazine  Full review
